Suspension Maintenance, Repair and Replacement for Trucks & Fleets

The suspension system on your truck has a very difficult job. Not only does it have to be able to handle the weight of whatever loads you need to move, it also has to provide stability and comfort on and off the road. Job sites aren’t always in the most accessible places, and you need your vehicles to make it on the roughest of terrain without shaking your drivers to pieces.

Red’s Garage has been servicing truck suspension systems in the Port Chester, NY area since 1988, and our highly trained and certified mechanics have the expertise and equipment to get the job done right. Suspension systems can be complicated, and it’s important to have expert eyes going over all the components.

Leaf Springs

Most consumer-level trucks rely heavily on leaf springs as main components in their suspension systems. Leaf springs are made up of several layers of spring steel stacked up and bent in a bow shape, which allows them to absorb the jostling energy of the pits and bumps in the road. Over time, these pieces of steel get weaker, and can even crack. Making sure your leaf springs are in good shape is crucial to the overall performance of your truck’s suspension.

Coil Springs

On heavier-duty trucks, coil springs work in conjunction with leaf springs to provide an extra measure of strength and stability. As with leaf springs, the steel coil springs will get weaker over time, and eventually they will require replacement. The professionals at Red’s Garage will examine your coil springs and leaf springs, and let you know whether it’s time for new springs.

Air Springs

Serious construction vehicles such as dump trucks, as well as municipal vehicles such as buses, usually use air springs rather than, or in conjunction with, leaf springs. Air springs are rubber bellows that can be filled with compressed air from an on-board compressor. One great advantage of air springs is that they can be filled to accommodate a heavy load, and then let some of the air out once that load has been dumped to allow for a more comfortable ride. They can also be pneumatic systems, which would use fluid to fill the bellows rather than air.

These systems have a much higher level of complexity, so it is absolutely critical that you only allow trained and certified professionals to install and maintain them. Fortunately, Red’s Garage is just the place for all your truck suspension needs!

Equalizer Beams

Vehicles with more than one rear axle require more than just some leaf springs or air springs. To better ensure proper functionality of the suspension system as a whole, these vehicles employ equalizer beams to link the suspension of multiple axles. These steel beams help spread the weight of the load evenly over all the wheels beneath, while helping the related suspension components correct for vehicle sway and road peculiarities.
